Silvia Grav: Human Fears in Black and White Photographs

Surreal and Spooky Photography

Surreal photography is maybe one of the most interesting areas in contemporary photography. It is always attractive for young photographers as a medium for searching and representing themselves. The surreal photography sometimes is strange or scary and in this way shows a photographer’s inner world.

Silvia Grav photographs and writes about her deepest emotions. She creates mostly black and white images, using shadows or luminosity. Her photos are surreal, sometimes even spooky, but the idea – to show us human fears and passion, arises from every single photo of Silvia Grav.

Artistic Journey

Silvia Grav was born in Pais Vasco (Spain) in 1993 and she is currently based in Los Angeles. She studied fine arts but after the second year, she decided to quit and devote to real art and real life. Her love for picture started very early – first she loved to draw, then she discovered another interesting tool to play with and to express herself – a camera.

Her work was first published in Juxtapoz and then in many other magazines. As one of the winners of the “20 Under 20”, award given to the best young photographers, Silvia moved to the United States where she had started with many interesting projects for different companies: HBO, Droga5, Elastic, Lexus and others.

Inner World of Silvia Grav

Silvia Grav photography shows surreal and dreamlike visions. Her art describes one crucial part of herself – the sadness. But, not only this emotion moves Silvia and engages in her art, she is aware of her other parts and the bright side of her personality. The images are a mix of her emotions and her need to experience the relief through photography.

Silvia uses sharp contrast and plays in post-production to create mysterious portraits and landscapes. The models are surrounded by light and smoke – as a way of representing pure and deep inner world of the artist.

My work is a little box where I can put all the influences and information I discover, love, live, hate, feel and fear.
